KERNEL

KERNEL (Kids Eating Right-Nutrition and Exercise for Life)

KERNEL is a youth-oriented program designed for Farmers Markets to engage children in learning about lifelong healthy eating habits, gardening and exercise.
Each week will have a short activity to do at the market. After the children complete the activity, they will be given an activity and recipe card as well as $2.00 in KERNEL Cash to spend at the market on fresh fruits, vegetables or plant starts!

A look ahead for KERNEL ACTIVITIES:

Below is an Archive sampling from the 2022 season’s previous KERNEL Activities and Links for Educational information to further explore.

JULY 27th
“Community Garden and Rock Painting”

At the market we will be painting rocks, bring your own or we will have some available too.

We had hoped to have an open house tour at the Pumpkin Patch Community Garden.  However, the garden does not have all the trees like the park and we are afraid it will be too warm.

JULY 13th
“Bike Safety”

With Special Guest

JUNE 29th
Butterflies are they “Pollinator or Pest”

June 15th
“Cross Pollination”

JUNE 8th
“Container Gardening”

KERNEL ACTIVITY FOR JUNE 1st
“Plant a Seed”, Sunflowers and Peas.

The KERNEL Activity for opening day May 25th was Transplanting a Tomato Plant.

We were fortunate to have WSU Master Gardeners on hand the same day, and many children benefited from their guidance.
Did you know that tomatoes can be planted in a container? And that basil is a great companion plant to plant with it. Both to help each other grow but they also taste yummy together!
